The Company is carrying out, through its step down subsidiary Maamba Collieries Limited (MCL), coal mining at Maamba in Zambia. Exploration activities in other locations are under way for coal and other minerals as well.
MCL is the largest coal mining Company in Zambia. It has total estimated reserves of 192 million tonnes comprising high grade and thermal grade coal, spread over 1070 hectares out of a total concession area of 7720 hectares at Maamba, in Sinazongwe district of Southern Province. MCL sells High-grade coal to local Industries in Zambia like cement after consuming apart of production for mixing with low-grade coal for power plant operation.
MCL commissioned a 300MW mine mouth, coal fired power plant in Phase-I, at Maamba. The estimated capital outlay of the integrated coal mining and power generation project is US$ 843 Million.
MCL employs scientific mining methodology and modern heavy earth moving equipment for coal mining. The Company operates a modern, environment friendly, Coal Handling and Processing Plant which ensures consistent quality to meet customer requirements effectively. MCL has achieved significant improvement in the management of coal dumps, mitigating air pollution.
In recognition of these achievements, MCL received the prestigious "Environmental Award 2012" from Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA).
For maintaining a history of sustained regulatory compliance over 2-3 years and demonstrated commitment to continuous environmental improvement, MCL received “Environmental Award for Overall Contribution to sound Management Practices in Industry 2016” from ZEMA.
