Manganese alloys comprise Silico Manganese and Ferro Manganese. Both these alloys are abundantly used as inputs in steel making. Manganese makes a significant contribution to the strength and hardness of finished steel. It also acts as a de-oxidizing agent, though not to the extent silicon does. Following the addition of manganese, any residual sulphur in the melt will become manganese sulphide, a relatively soft and malleable compound which is not detrimental to the subsequent rolling/forging of steel unlike iron sulphide. For these reasons, virtually no steel is produced without the addition of manganese.
