Sugar

Manufacture of sugar is one of the early diversifications taken up by NBV. A state-of-the-art, energy efficient sugar plant located at Samalkot (in the sugar cane rich belt of coastal Andhra Pradesh) operates with an overall capacity of 3500 tcd and manufactures sugar that is on par with refined sugar in terms of quality, with 26 to 28 ICUMSA colour. The plant is strategically located in close proximity to Visakhapatnam and Kakinada seaports – this facilitates exports to overseas clientele.

In the domestic retail market, NBV markets the sugar produced under the brand name of Deccan. The product is available in 1 kg packs.

The Company has taken the following steps to encourage cane development:
  • Financial aid: Financial assistance has been offered to farmers through commercial banks
  • Equipment: Chemicals and farm implements needed for cultivation have been offered to farmers on subsidy through the Cane Development Council
  • Infrastructure: Post harvest, the farmers would need convenient access routes that would enable them to reach their produce to the plant in the shortest time possible. Keeping this in mind, NBV has played an active role in developing rural roads and link roads for easy transportation of cane from farmers' fields to the plant.
  • Training: NBV has also been endeavouring to empower farmers through knowledge and expertise in their field. Special training classes have been conducted for the cane growers where scientists from various Agricultural Research Stations would participate.
  • Reducing seed cost: Efforts have been on to encourage single bud nursery to reduce seed cost
  • Drip irrigation: Water has become a precious commodity and a universal concern because of its paucity. NBV, in a bid to conserve water, has introduced drip irrigation amongst farmers. PVC / HDPE pipes have been distributed to them for use in new borewells and subsurface irrigation pipelines have been laid for this purpose.
  • Bio control measures: Alternate measures have been explored to reduce the usage of pesticides in tackling borer problems. One such solution has been to introduce bio control measures for the cane crop.
  • Bio earth: Bucking the long-standing trend of using chemical fertilizers, NBV has produced enriched bio-earth which it supplies to the farmers for use in lieu of chemical fertilizers.
  • Organic content: In a move to improve the organic matter in the soil, NBV encourages cane farmers to produce and use vermi compost. The company has also organized subsidies through the Cane Development Council to enable the farmers put up vermi compost sheds for this purpose.
Down Stream Products

One of the by-products of sugar manufacture is rectified spirit – the distillery attached to the sugar plant of NBV at Samalkot produces 6 million bulk litres of Rectified Spirit per annum. This is further processed into Extra Neutral Alcohol.
